This small question confronted me deeply for the longest time. I tried to understand it in my own way, not getting anywhere until adulthood, when I slowly discovered what fills my heart with momentum like a running engine.
All human beings come to this world with a purpose assigned by God. Many are evident from an early age, making it rather easy for parents to direct the child. However, today I come to speak to those who have no idea what their passion or purpose is, even since childhood. I’m sure many still struggle to know what they were born for in this life.
I want to assure you that, although at this point you might feel your calling is not clear, it does not mean it’s not well hidden under the rubble of doubt and disbelief.
“Train up a child in the way he should go [and in keeping with his individual gift or bent], and when he is old he will not depart from it. [Eph. 6:4; II Tim. 3:15.]”
Proverbs 22:6 AMP
Unlike what is popularly thought, the meaning of this verse has to do with instructing the child in the way he has been called for to carry out on earth. Logically, he will never depart from it because it is simply his God given passion. Therefore, rather than being a tedious job, it becomes a work of the heart, bringing a sense of accomplishment.
Very few things caught my attention while growing up and I never could say, “Wow! I love doing this!” I saw some signs of what I currently love, but for some reason I could not discern it back then. I even wondered if there was something wrong.
Let me give you this short testimony. One night, in my teenage years, I had a powerful encounter with the Lord. I was caught up to the Second Heaven mounted on a big white eagle and I remember holding a lit up sword in my right hand. I found myself fighting against beings that were flying around me and I realized I had NO FEAR. The fear was completely gone! (I have always been a very fearful person and to experience the complete absence of fear for the first time, made this experience one of the most extraordinary I’ve had in my life thus far). Then, the eagle came down to my room and and I went back to bed.
I had no knowledge of the power of God at that time. I was never taught what I just saw and was also surrounded by people who did not know either. Therefore, I didn’t discuss the matter with anyone but I could never forget.
“There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear expects punishment. The person who is afraid has not been made perfect in love.”
1 John 4:18 CEB
It was not until 2008 when the Lord touched my heart and spoke to me clearly so I could no longer ignore Him. I started to understand what I was here for, not precisely fitting with my wrong point of view. After that, a long process of perfecting my heart and transforming my way of thinking started, strengthening my passion in Christ daily. I’m still walking.
Honestly, I thought there was nothing special about me for many years. I thought I would never find that very thing that I was designed to accomplish. I was totally confused, thinking I could be successful with other people’s ways that didn’t fit the bill for me, let alone made me happy.
“The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy and loving-kindness, O Lord, endure forever–forsake not the works of Your own hands. [Ps. 57:2; Phil. 1:6.]”
Psalm 138:8 AMP
Though you may be feeling lost right now, you must understand that’s just a lie sown in your soul by the enemy. It might feel strong within you, but that is not the truth. The time is now for you to be transformed and begin to live according to your design, carrying out your purpose with passion and joy. There are people who run really fast and there are others who run slow like me and THAT’S OK. As long as you keep walking it’ll be fine. Also, I’m not only talking about the works of the ministry. The Lord wants His people to permeate every arena of life representing the Kingdom of God with dignity and expressing His atmosphere in those places.
Search your soul and look for the signs of what you naturally do well. Also, pay attention to those things you tend to gravitate towards that make you feel happy and fulfilled. Many times the Lord allows you to know a trace of your design through how you respond to certain circumstances.
However, to seek the Lord with all your heart is what is most important. The secrets of your destiny, purpose and design are hidden in the depths of your beloved Jesus.
“Yes, let us know (recognize, be acquainted with, and understand) Him; let us be zealous to know the Lord [to appreciate, give heed to, and cherish Him]. His going forth is prepared and certain as the dawn, and He will come to us as the [heavy] rain, as the latter rain that waters the earth.”
Hosea 6:3 AMP
Lord you are my hope and my rock, forgive my unbelief and show me the way. Let me See your plans for my life. Give me the certainty and clarity to understand. Give me the strength to start walking on my destiny. In Jesus name, Amen.
“For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome.”
Jeremiah 29:11 AMP
