Our soul, or what the Bible often refers to as the heart, is wonderful! It’s role is too important to be ignored since it can be full of darkness or Light. The soul is like a processor and a transmitter; it’s the bridge between the spirit and the natural realm. The mind, feelings and will are all part of the soul. Therefore, the greater the light, the greater the discernment of the voice of God and His will for your life. Watch out for what your soul sees and hears.
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
John 10:27 NIV
One day at a family gathering, we all sat down to watch what we thought was a comedy movie. However, the movie had unpleasant scenes that made me very uncomfortable. Honestly, the movie was bad, but I didnt want to be rude and leave the room, so I watched it in its entirety. A few days later, I heard the Holy Spirit telling me in a dream: Jireh, how is it that you will do the works of the Lord and go set the captives free, if you come home later on and sit down to watch a movie that is not pleasant to God? I’m not saying that watching TV is bad, though not everything should be seen.”
As soon as I woke up, I went to the Lord and ask for forgiveness. I have always been very careful with what I watch on Tv, though, after that correction I’m way more cautious. By the way, I felt so much love in His words, I can still remember the tenderness of His voice. A great example on how to admonish people.
““I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive.”
1 Corinthians 10:23 NIV
There are too many practices that are not beneficial and it surprises me how people perceive them as good. No wonder why christians end up asking themselves, why there’s no evident progress in their spiritual life. (A typical symptom of a callused heart)… Whoever is interested in living for the Lord and learning from Him, understands the value of observing His words and putting them into practice.
For instance, we are like a vacuum cleaner; as soon as you turn it on it will absorb everything in the surroundings. Similarly, your eyes are the windows of your soul (heart). In other words, the trash bag of the vacuum cleaner. If what you see doesn’t build you up it will certainly do the opposite.
“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Matthew 6:21 NIV
Having a pure heart (soul) is key to hear the voice of God. EVERYTHING accumulates within the soul, thereby the Lord says. “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of”. Here me on this, the Lord doesn’t come about with all these laws just to put a heavy burden over you, on the contrary, His desire is for us to avoid carrying around debris and impurities. These would only harden our hearts and cloud our relationship with Him. He wants to prevent us from losing our ability to discern between right and wrong.
We are responsable to watch over our hearts; we must observe with caution what we receive through our eyes and ears. For every show I’m about to watch on TV I usually ask myself this question: Is it edifying? After answering the question I normally take action. Other times, I feel God putting it in my heart and I flip the channel immediately.
Remember, “faith comes by hearing”. Therefore, your faith will be in accordance to what you see or hear. Your trust in the Lord will be very poor if you feed yourself with trash, because your faith is on those very things you let inside your soul. It’s about time to take soap and water (the Word of God), and make some decisions to wash off the darkness step by step. I assure you, It will be easier for you to hear God’s voice as you move forward.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Proverbs 4:23 NIV
“Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.””
Luke 11:34-36 NIV
Lord, forgive me for everything that I have seen or heard without your approval. Cleanse my soul and help me discern what’s convenient and what’s not. Give me self control to make the right decision and live a pure life before You. Open my eyes so I can see you. In Jesus Name, Amen.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.”
Matthew 5:8 NIV
Receive this word in the fear of the Lord.
God bless you all.
